| This fort is situated close to the picturesque Hill Station of Mahabaleshwar in the Satara District near Wai, and can be seen from the Pasarani Ghat. This fort is seen in the background in the movies ‘Swades’ and ‘Being Cyrus’. Despite this proximity to one of the most famous tourist spots in Maharashtra, this fort is not very well known. Surrounded by the waters of the Dhom Dam on 3 sides, this fort is covered with thick forests at the top. This fort was mainly built to keep watch on Wai to old Mahabaleshwar rout. This fort also served as a stopping point between the Kenjalgad Fort and Mahabaleshwar. The structure of this fort is considered ideal for a fort, as the manpower required for guarding it is less compared to its size. The trench at the top has extremely clayey soil, and could be a mine for ‘Geru’, which is a type of soil having high iron content. During those times, Geru was rare, and hence this site was important.
From the top of citadel one can get breathtaking views of the evergreen plateau of Mahabaleshwar. Also the Rayreshwar plateau, Kenjalgad, Rohida the reservoir of Dhom dam & Pandavgad can be seen. From the temple one can see the ‘kates point’ of Mahabaleshwar. |
